Mammography (3-D, tomosynthesis)

3-D mammography (also called breast tomosynthesis) uses low-level x-rays at doses similar to standard 2-D mammography. It involves taking multiple 2-D images of a stationary, compressed breast at different angles and then reconstructing a 3-D image from those 2-D images. The main advantage is that tomosynthesis avoids potential interpretation problems caused by imaging tissues that directly overlap. Breast tomosynthesis is used mainly as a diagnostic tool following a suspicious mammogram result. It is not currently in widespread use. The Selenia® Dimensions® System (Hologic, Inc.) is the only 3-D mammography system that is FDA-approved in the United States.
